Spain travelled to Euro 96 under coach Javier Clemente with an experienced squad built around captain Fernando Hierro, goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta and attacking talents such as Kiko, Alfonso, Julen Guerrero and a young Luis Enrique. Drawn with France, Bulgaria and Romania, they came through the group unbeaten, with Guillermo Amor scoring the late winner against Romania that sent them into the knockout rounds.
